Passive Infrared Sensor (PIR)

Tunstall’s Passive Infrared Sensor (PIR) is a wireless movement detector that is installed in the home and programmed to detect activity or inactivity depending on the needs or condition of the user.

Under the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) RAP Scheme, the PIR is now available to DVA Gold Card holders. Visit the Healthcare professionals page for more information.

What is the PIR?

What is the PIR?

Tunstall's PIR is a wireless movement detector that is installed in the home and programmed to detect activity or inactivity depending on the needs or condition of the user. When the programmed activity is not carried out it actives an alarm call to the Tunstall emergency response centre so that the user can be attended to.

The PIR provides superior motion detection and reliable long-term operation while minimising false calls. The lightweight PIR can be wall mounted without the need for screw fixings or drilling and offers simple Plug & Play registration, together with the flexibility to allow for free movement of pets around a property, to prevent false alarm calls. The wireless PIR can be used to provide the following:

  • Activity monitoring: The PIR can be used to detect activity so that if movement has been detected in a home at any time or within a predetermined time period (e.g. overnight), an alarm will be raised to a carer to provide assist for the user.
  • Inactivity monitoring: The PIR can also be used to detect inactivity so that if movement has not been detected within a home over a predetermined time period, an alarm will be raised to the monitoring centre.
  • Combination monitoring: The PIR can be used to provide both activity and inactivity monitoring simultaneously thereby reducing costs, while significantly increasing levels or safety and security for the user.

How it works

Using Plug & Play technology, the PIR can be registered to Tunstall medical alarms by simply activating it. Once movement is detected, the PIR will generate an alarm call to either a personal recipient of 24-hour monitoring centre, where the type of alarm raised can be identified and the most appropriate course of action taken.

Features and benefits

  • Plug & Play registration: provides easy installation by simple activation once the Tunstall medical alarm is in programming mode.
  • No screws wall mounting option: the PIR can be wall mounted without screw fixings or drilling for ease of installation.
  • Automatic 'walk test' mode: allows simple range checking on installation to ensure complete coverage within a room.
  • Automatic low battery warnings: provieds a warning to the monitoring centre, when the battery requires changing.
  • Simple entry/exit mode assignnment: allows easy installation and programming at the flick of a switch or the press of a button.
  • 'Pet alley' facility: raises the beam of the PIR above floor height to allow pets to wander freely throughout a dwelling, without raising an alarm.
