Fall Detector Pendants, Bracelets and Fall Detection Devices

What is an intelligent fall pendant a.k.a “fall alert devices”?

An intelligent fall pendant or “fall alert device” is a small, lightweight device which can automatically detect if the wearer has fallen and raise an alarm call for help, via a paired Tunstall medical alarm unit. The pendant also provides the wearer with a means of manually calling for help from anywhere in their home 24 hours a day, and cancelling a call in the event of a false activation.

How do falls detection devices work?

Fall detection devices are normally worn as a personal alarm pendant around the neck or wrist. When the wearer loses their balance or experiences a fall, the pendant registers the sudden movement using a variety of intelligent sensors that tracks the wearer’s usual speed and altitude, and any sudden changes.

If your personal fall alarm detects you’ve experienced a fall, it will automatically trigger an alert so that Tunstall’s 24/7 Customer Care team can immediately respond, talk to you, and summon appropriate help. The alarm can also be triggered manually with a single press of a button on the alarm pendant.

Note that some fall detection pendants, like the Smartfall Blue pendant, are linked with the user’s in-home alarm. All of Tunstall’s in-home alarms, including the Lifeline Digital and Tunstall SmartLink Guardian 4G have compatible fall detection pendants available. These pendants are designed to be used primarily around the home. For users seeking a personal fall device to be used independently, such as outdoors or away from home, a stand-alone device like the Tunstall Gem4 is a better option, which is a fully self-sufficient personal alarm device with added fall detection functionality.

Tunstall’s range of personal fall alarms for the elderly

Lightweight and discreet with a range of wearing options, our intelligent fall pendants and fall alert bracelets provide constant care. There are several options in style and functionality, designed to suit a variety of needs and lifestyles.

Vibby Fall Detection Bracelet

Vibby is a wearable falls detection device, used by individuals to support independent living. It detects hard falls and raises an automatic alert, plus allows users to manually call for help.

The sensor, worn on either the wrist as a fall alert bracelet or on a pendant around the neck, works with an innovative algorithm which measures loss of altitude and speed, so it can detect if a person falls from an upright position. The wearer can also raise an fall alert directly from their device.

Smartfall Blue Fall Pendant

The Smartfall is an intelligent falls pendant, usually worn around the neck, which allows users to raise an alert by pressing the help button and also automatically detects falls, if enabled. Smartfall can be paired with SmartLink alarms for individuals who wish to live more independently.

Smartfall allows the user to generate an alarm call from anywhere in the home to the Tunstall 24/7 Customer Care Centre by pressing the help button on the pendant.

Choosing a personal fall detection device for yourself or a loved one

A fall detector can be life saving. The type of fall detection device you choose should always take into consideration the user’s circumstances, including their living arrangements, risk factors and lifestyle. The best way to determine which solution is right for you is to reach out to Tunstall’s friendly Customer Service team, who will be able to offer you tailored advice based on your requirements.

Please be aware when choosing a falls detector:

  • The fall detection technology in fall detectors does not allow analysis and interpretation of all fall situations. Soft falls, slumping falls, descent controlled falls against a wall or a chair may not be detected by the falls detector.

  • In spite of its algorithm capabilities and considering the technologies used and the target to minimise false alarms, all falls even dangerous-heavy falls cannot be detected, this is the reason why the presence of the manual trigger on the detector remains vital for the user.

Getting funding for a fall detector

In Australia and New Zealand, there are a number of government funding assistance programs available for eligible clients. For example, under the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) RAP Scheme, a falls pendant may be available to DVA Gold Card holders. Visit our DVA Referrals page for more information. NDIS funding may also be available depending on your circumstances, please contact us if you are unsure.

Benefits of having a fall detector

Although there are many people who are able to live independently without the need of a personal alarm or fall detector, for those who want extra security or peace of mind, they can be an invaluable asset.
