Can You Get A Fully Funded Personal Alarm?

Can you get a fully funded personal alarm?

Personal alarms are becoming increasingly popular among people wishing to retain their independence, especially those living alone. A personal alarm device can offer peace of mind for the wearer and their loved ones, greater mobility and independence, and can even save someone’s life, but if you are on the fence about getting one because of the price, this article will help you explore your options.

How can you get funding for a personal alarm in Australia?

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

The National Disability Insurance Scheme is a national program that aims to provide tailor-made services to eligible people living with intellectual, physical, sensory and other types of disabilities. If you're eligible, you may be able to use your NDIS funding for a personal safety alarm device under your NDIS plan. As a registered NDIS provider, Tunstall has decades of experience working with people with long-term health needs and can help NDIS participants include a Connected Care solution like our in-home alarms and mobile personal alarms as part of a tailored NDIS plan.

Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP)

CHSP is a government initiative that helps older adults stay independent by providing them with additional support services. All clients enrolled in the CHSP program are eligible for the aged care personal monitoring systems funding, you just need to speak to your CHSP service provider upon becoming a confirmed CHSP client. It is important to note, however, that you may be asked to contribute a small amount to access government-funded personal mobile alarms. This amount will be in line with your contribution policy as a client.

Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) RAP Scheme

RAP helps veterans by providing them with assistive devices and services based on their individual clinical requirements. DVA Gold and white card holders who have been assessed by an approved healthcare provider are eligible for funded medical alarm services and care sensor devices. To be eligible for RAP-funded personal medical alarm system, the DVA card holder must be assessed by an occupational therapist, registered nurse or practice nurse, or a physiotherapist. Disability Allowance from Work and Income

You might be able to receive some financial assistance towards the costs of renting an alarm if you qualify for the Disability Allowance from Work and Income. You can apply for yourself, your partner or your child. The person in need of a personal alarm system must have a health condition that will last at least six months from when they were diagnosed. They should also have ongoing costs due to their condition that is not fully covered by other agencies. A health professional should also confirm that the person needs the personal alarm system because of their medical condition or disability and that they are going to need the device on a regular basis. The personal alarm system should also come from an MSD-accredited supplier, however, if that is not the case, you can still contact them to discuss your situation.

Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC)

If you need a personal alarm because of an injury that is covered by the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), they can help you obtain aids and equipment that will help you with your everyday tasks. The ACC may be able to help you as long as the device can help support you when you are suffering from an injury and help you recover from it. A letter of recommendation from a doctor needs to be sent to the ACC and you will be contacted after this.

Veterans’ Independence Programme

If you are a veteran and your service qualifies you, and you are not able to get help from other government agencies, you can get help with the cost of a personal medical alarm system from the Veterans' Independence program. You can check your eligibility here: https://www.veteransaffairs.mil.nz/eligibility/check-your-eligibility/.
